This project involved a new airport terminal building – providing a Bay of Islands gateway for around three times more passengers. The terminal offers more space for arrivals and departures, state-of-the-art baggage screening, an elevated public viewing gallery and a separate luggage collection area. Its modern exterior features cedar facades and detailed precast panelling, including a living wall and specially commissioned local artworks.

UFL worked closely with the architect and interior designer to conceptualise and deliver a full furniture fitout, in a palette of black, timber and other natural tones to reflect the region’s outstanding outdoors. This entailed beam seating, café furniture and dwell seating including locally made J Series tables, leaners that feature built in power, bins, tape barriers, counters and more. AS202 Beam Seats are upholstered in durable, quality vinyl for longevity and ease of cleaning.

Distinctive, large Sancal La Isla ottomans create organic shapes and add interest while adding separate seating from the raised viewing gallery. Andreu World’s elegant pedestal style Reverse Tables are complemented by a mix of Enea Lottus Chairs and Coma Wood Stools.

The new airport terminal was developed as a ‘shovel ready’ Far North project, facilitated by the Provincial Growth Fund, focused on upgrading key infrastructure to support the region’s tourism industry and economy.
